Summary

Plays almost identically to Windows, but a HUD "stutter" makes this game alternately Platinum or Silver—an experience that can flip on each subsequent play session.

Installing & Running

Installs and runs out-of-box on Steam.

Results & Issues

Texture pop-in occurs on this game regardless of OS, but the pop-in distance seemed just a bit shorter on Linux. The effect was therefore more noticeable, but only when compared side-by-side against Windows.

There were some brief slowdowns, but these were extremely rare (once or twice per mission, lasting half-a-second or less).

When the player moves left or right (especially when crouched), the HUD edges are briefly "delayed" before following the camera. On Windows, the animation of this effect was smooth. However, the effect was not smooth at all on Linux, creating the impression of stutter, even though framerates remained constant. I could not identify any means of resolving this.

In some play sessions, my eyes quickly grew accustomed to this janky animation, and the game remained playable. During other sessions—even repeating from the same save point—the effect was too distracting to properly enjoy the game. This variability prevents the game from receiving an otherwise Platinum rating.

Notes

If using the widescreen mod, there are a few sections that do not display properly in the introductory cutscene (notably, the training helmet). This occurs on both Windows and Linux. All other areas of the game display correctly.
